Die Sägepalme (Serenoa repens) ist eine ausschließlich im Südosten der USA vorkommende, buschige Zwergpalme, die bis zu vier Meter groß wird. Sie besitzt fächerförmige Blätter, die aus 18 bis 24 Einzelblättern bestehen. Diese sind am Rand scharf gesägt. Die Blüten sind in dicht behaarten, kolbenartigen Blütenständen angeordnet. Die Früchte ähneln einer Kokosnuss, werden 10 bis 12 cm lang und enthalten 3 - 5 Samen mit ca. 60-70% Öl. Das Öl ist unter 22°C fest und wird daher auch als Babassuwachs oder Babassufett bezeichnet.
