Das Marulaöl wird aus den Kernen des Marulabaums gewonnen. Der Marulabaum (Sclerocarya birrea) wächst in den warmen und frostfreien Regionen Subäquatorial-Afrikas. Das ist das Gebiet von Nigeria bis Äthiopien und Südafrika. Der Marulabaum wird auch Elefantenbaum genannt, da Elefanten die duftenden und gärenden Früchte des Baums gerne essen. Der Baum wächst wild und wird nicht kultiviert. Er ist frostempfindlich aber tockenheits- und salzresistent, wird 15-20 Meter hoch und bildet rote Blüten. Früchte trägt der Baum zwischen April und Juni. Die Früchte sind gelb und sehen pflaumenartig aus. Die Kerne müssen in Handarbeit aus der Frucht entnommen werden. Danach wird durch Kaltpressung das dunkelgelbe bis orange Öl gewonnen. Der Marulabaum und dessen Erzeugnisse sind schon seit Jahrtausenden in der südafrikanischen Kultur bekannt. So wird zum Beispiel die Frucht als Grundlage für Erfrischungsgetränke und Spirituosen verwendet.
